After my Campag Veloce left hand shifter (front derailleur) paddle arm snapped off during an up-shift, I was stuck wondering how best to rectify the situation... I decided to modify my compact 2x10 Tiagra drivetrain (with Campag Veloce shifters - yes it works, except the spring load in the front derailleur meant upshifting was putting too much strain on the weak plastic paddle arm, hence it snapping off) to a 1 x 10, eliminating the need for front shifting. I am a grinder - I ride with low cadence but at high speed, constant high power outputs etc... I decided to try the oval chain ring, and was delighted with the end result. I went with the 50t, and have used it with both an ultegra 11 - 28 10 speed casette and I'm currently using a pretty generic 11 - 34 Shimano casette (also 10 speed)... I personally have had no issues with the chain line (using Shimano 105 cranks), my rear derailleur is the medium cage Tiagra 4700, and holds the chain on absolutely fine (along with the chain ring being narrow wide, which is pretty essential if going 1 by...) I don't use a chain guide or clutch mechanism and I have had no issues with a dropping chain, or chain slap etc... So mechanically, this is an amazing fit for me. This set up has seen me through since the back end of last winter to Autumn now, and is still a beast. I noticed in my first rides out with this thing that on 20 - 35 mile solo jaunts (I only ride solo) my average speed had gone from between 14 - 16 mph to 16 - 18 mph... This is quantifiable data which I am stating because this was the single biggest change/leap forward in terms of an upgrade that I have ever made. I could not tell any difference in sensation in terms of my pedal stroke - obviously I am missing any comfortable climbing gears with my current set up, but I regularly attack some beastly climbs and find 50t oval over 34 (25:17) ratio doesn't stop me so long as I'm prepared to bite down on the mouth piece... I am considering getting a 42t oval narrow wide chain ring which I will use in the same set up, but over winter for my commuting. I ride all year round and pretty much every day, and I know that in wet cold windy conditions, I'm fair less likely to ever need to be gunning along with a 50:11 ratio, and will be happier with a more mellow climbing option of 21:17. Final comment, on my Black Marin Gestalt 2019 Gravel bike, this thing looks absolutely awesome... think cursed gothic industrial steampunk vibes... perfect aesthetic for a metal head like me. It's always a real talking point if I bump into other cyclists when out and about... roadies tend to look a little upset and confused, where as mountain bikers, or fixie enthusiasts seem to take a REAL interest.
