Merida Matts 2015
Entry-Level Hardtail
The Merida Matts is a great entry-level hardtail for novice and beginners cyclists on a budget. The Matts is the brand’s oldest hardtail range and has been dropped to just 2 models for 2015. With the rise in popularity of bigger wheel sizes (especially 650b), less emphasis is placed on the original 26”.
Using 26” wheels the Matts models are agile and fun which is great for any off-road adventure. Both the 15-MD and 10-V models are priced well under £400 so fall within Cycle 2 Work thresholds. The Matts is versatile with a relaxed geometry for upright and confident riding, so whether you want to ride off-road or on-road it will perform well. It makes a capable commuter to beat the morning rush.

Features
Simple But Reliable Spec
Both models in the range feature the same 6061 aluminium frame. 6061 is a high grade aluminium alloy that can be used in more advanced forms. To see it on a hardtail at this price point is good, often manufacturers will use a lower 7005 alloy for this price. But, to improve the frame further Merida double butt the tubes, helping them to reduce weight whilst keeping all the strength and stiffness needed for an off-roader.
To improve this strength further the Matts features a ‘Shotgun’ profiled downtube. This does add a little extra weight, but in return you the frame is much stronger where it needs to be. Merida are so sure about the strength and quality of the frame that the Matts MTB comes with a lifetime guarantee - you don’t get this from other manufacturers, especially on bikes at such a low price point.
The spec for both models is simple, but durable and reliable - just what a beginner needs. The Suntour XCT fork gives you 100mm of cushioning for small bumps which is ideal for singletrack, dirt and gravel paths (as well as tarmac). Shimano components and 26” Merida rims are all entry-level but are tried and tested. For recreational riding they will perform well. Where the two models differ is the braking system. The 15-MD uses mechanical disc brakes, and the 10-V uses alloy V-brakes.

Rider
First Time Riders
The Matts really is geared towards people who have very limited experience on bikes. The geometry is relaxed and the ride is stable and well balanced. You can take the Matts pretty much on any road or track, and it is a great fitness machine for commuting or recreational riding.
One decision you will face is which of the two MTB models to choose from. Do you go mechanical disc brakes, or V-brakes? Mechanical disc brakes work better in poor conditions (wet, dirt and spray) than V-brakes, but also require much more maintenance. If you’re planning to ride your Matts off-road more often, then the disc brakes may be a good idea.
