I’m a newbie gravel rider and I’d only ridden my Specialized Diverge on roads and cycle paths previously. Cycling through the mud tested the capabilities of my bike as well as my bike handling skills. Riding on muddy tracks was a new experience for me and I loved it. Next time I’ll get mudguard to keep my face clean.

Gravel bikes are a great way to embrace the winter conditions without losing too much pedalling efficiency. As well as being a lot of fun, riding slippery off-road tracks is a great way to improve your bike handling skills.
Essential Kit For Muddy Gravel Bike Riding
MTB Shoes
Mountain bike shoes like the Endura Hummvee flats are a good choice for your first off-road adventure. These shoes grip your bike pedals even in the slipperiest conditions but it’s still very easy to put your foot down whenever you need to. This will help you to ride with more confidence than when you’re clipped in. They’re also comfortable and easy to walk in.
MTB Trousers
Fox Ranger Women’s MTB are a great alternative to bib tights. They're an especially good choice for muddy gravel riding as they are durable but still close fitting and stretchy. This gives you the freedom of movement you need to cycle efficiently but are a more robust than lycra.
Waterproof Jacket
Made from high quality materials waterproof jackets like the Endura Singletrack protect you from the elements while allowing your body to breath. This means you’ll stay dry but won’t overheat when you’re cycling. If you want to ride regularly through the British winter, then a waterproof top layer is essential.
