Mavic Cosmic Carbone 40 Clincher Road Wheelset With Wheel-Tyre System

Mavic?s Cosmic Carbone 40 C wheels have been 3 years in development. Engineered and tested in a wind tunnel they?re designed to go fast in a straight line and handle cross winds more effectively.

Rim:

In Mavic?s words the Carbone 40 C is ?the first reliable carbon clincher?, and although not fully carbon (there?s an aluminium insert) - braking has been improved, as has stiffness and durability.  

One of the problems of carbon clinchers is it?s not a good conductor of heat.  So when you?re braking hard the heat built up can cause structural problems.  Of which, glass transition is the worst - the resin holding the fibres in place can turn into a liquid causing catastrophic failure.

The Cosmic Carbone 40 gets around this with a super lightweight aluminium insert brake pad which dissipates heat and creates a very smooth brake track.  This allows for better braking performance without the need for a full aluminium rim, so you can keep the aero and light carbon profile.

Stiffness has also been added through FORE drilling technology.  The spokes are threaded through the inner wall of the rim.  The outer face remains solid which improves stiffness by 20%.

Spokes:

The Carbone 40 C comes with steel spokes which are not the lightest but are strong.  Mavic have optimised the spokes for road racing however with a bladed aero shape with a narrow front face.  Double butting also helps to shave off extra grams making the steel spokes as light as possible without losing strength.

Hub:

High quality QRM+ cartridge bearings provide smooth rollability - they?re also very durable for long lasting performance.  The hub itself has been specifically designed for racing with its carbon centre hub and aluminium aero flanges.
